The Other Wes Moore (Race, Inequality, and Injustice) Aniyah & Safia

  Race, Inequality, Injustice

The Other Wes Moore is a great book to read that talks about the theme of race in an impactful way. The book follows up on the lives of two people who share the same name. Wes Moore had grown up with similar circumstances, but he had taken a totally different path in life.  One Wes Moore had overcome childhood poverty and became a successful business leader and a Rhodes Scholar while on the other hand the other Wes Moore became a convicted felon who is serving a life sentence. The book often shifts between the men's stories allowing them to unfold at the same time. For example, the exploration of race that was in the book is a central theme that sheds light on the issues and general challenges that people face specifically from marginalized communities. Between the narratives of both Wes Moore's the author goes into the impact of race on opportunities, outcomes and expectations. I feel like reading this book challenges the readers to basically confront their own assumptions about race and how it influences one's life.

One of the most touching points in the book is when it highlights the role of outside factors. For instance, systemic racism, poverty and also the lack of resources within shaping the lives of the two Wes Moore's. Regardless of both of them growing up in the same city, the experiences that each of them faced were different. Their experiences with race along with the opportunities available to them were totally different. The book shows how important understanding race and class is and how to actively work towards creating a fair society. Not only that “The Other Wes Moore '' mentions the difficulty of identity and how race intersects with a person's personal choice and circumstances. Reading this book really serves as a reminder of the need for the understanding and empathy needed to address the issues that impact individuals from diverse racial backgrounds.

I feel as though as readers we are prompted to reflect on our own biases and privileges this way, we can consider the ways in which we can contribute to encouraging a more inclusive society. This book urges us to engage in difficult situations and conversations that involve race, inequality and privilege. It also encourages people to strive towards creating a place where people are not judged based on their skin tone. In conclusion, the book “The Other Wes Moore” is a book that weaved together the lives of two people with the same name but different destinies. Wes Moore wants people to confront the complexities of race and its intense implications on communities and people.
